Washington, D.C.— Democracy is stronger when it amplifies women’s voices. Yet in many countries women are still fighting for the right to be seen and heard.

Gender-based violence (GBV) is one of the greatest threats to women’s full civic and political participation, with an estimated one in three women experiencing either physical or sexual assault in her lifetime. When women cannot express their opinion or fully participate in social, economic or political life without the fear of violence, it poses a direct threat to democracy.

It is not enough for women to speak out about their experiences and to advocate for change – we also need families, communities and governments to #HearHerNow.

During its 10 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, the Women’s Democracy Network is activating its powerful network of women leaders around the world to raise awareness about gender-based violence, discuss solutions and encourage more women to make their voices heard in the political process.  The 10 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence social media toolkit can be accessed here. Further instructions on how to engage with the campaign can be found here
